Both secular and sacred music was written in the 14th century, as composers continued to experiment with polyphony and rhythmic structures, including isorythm, a sustained single rhythmic pattern. Syncopated rhythm--the accenting of a weak beat when a strong beat is expected--was also introduced by French composer Guillaume de Machat. Listen to how accented rhythm and syncopation affect a piece of music by clicking on the link above.
