Because the Qur'an prohibits the worship of idols, representational art was generally prohibited in Islamic religious art. As a result, most Islamic art developed in nonrepresentational ways, with an emphasis on complex geometry, arabesques, and calligraphy (See figs. 8.9-8.14, pp. 220-226). The complex designs of Islamic art and architecture are often based on patterns. Click on the link above to explore composition with pattern, including radial patterns. How did Islamic artists and architects use patterns, and what are some of the principles of patterning and geometry you observe in Islamic art?
