  1. Stagehands would be paid $22.40 per hour. Bill Crew, a stagehand, worked 33 hours. (a) How much will be deducted from Bill's pay for Social Security? (b) How much will be deducted for Medicare?


  2. Suburban Life ran the following advertisement: "School Bus Driver CDL Driver permit desirable. Will train if needed. $10.85 per hour." If the driver drives for 45 hours per week (time and a half for overtime), what will be the driver's gross pay?


  3. A newspaper reported the hourly wages for building equipment operators. The top hourly wage for union members will be $20.95, an increase of $1.25 or 6.3%. This week J.W. Masters worked 48 hours and is entitled to time-and-a-half overtime. How much did J.W. earn?


  4. A school psychologist earns $50,000 a year in the Miami-Dade public school system. She is single and claims one exemption. (a) What would be taken out of her check each month for Social Security? (b) What would be taken out each month for Medicare?


  5. Dick Hercher pays his two employees $600 and $950 per week. Assume a state unemployment tax rate of 5.6% and a federal unemployment rate of .8%. What state and federal unemployment taxes will Dick play at the end of quarter 1 and quarter 2?


  6. Angel Rice earns $1,100 per week. She is married and claims 3 exemptions. What is Angel's income tax? Use the percentage method?


  7. Suburban Life ran the following help-wanted advertisement: "Building Inspector Village of Woodridge, starting salary $33,280 per year." John, who is married and claims two exemptions, is trying to determine what his weekly take-home would be if he took this job. The only deductions would be FIT, Social Security, Medicare, and 3% state income tax. What would John's net pay be at the end of each week? Use the percentage method of withholding.


  8. At Home Depot, Chin You earned $2,600 for the last two weeks. He is married and paid bi-weekly and claims 2 exemptions. What is Chin's income tax? Use the percentage method.


  9. Before this weekly payroll, Lee Roy, who works at Sears is $500 below the maximum level for Social Security earnings. Lee is married and claims 3 exemptions. What is Lee's net pay if he earns $1,400?


  10. At Subway, Rita Sey earned $450 for the week. She is married and claims 2 exemptions. How much is Rita's Federal Income tax? What will she pay for Social Security and Medicare? (Assume no base has been reached for Social Security)
