Writing a Column

Write a column on one of the topics in the list below. Be sure to spell out your point of view using your own distinctive voice.
  • Take a position opposite the one you chose for your editorial in the previous exercise.

  • Research a recent Supreme Court decision you find interesting. Do you agree with the justices' decision? Disagree? Explain your point of view.

  • In early 2006, the U.S. Congress was considering a proposal to build a double set of steel barriers with floodlights, surveillance cameras and motion detectors along 700 miles of the U.S. border with Mexico. Write a personal column in which you take a position on fortifying the border this way.

  • Is it time for a female U.S. president? Explain your position.
