The following summarizes what a student should have learned from reading this chapter of A History of Western Art.

It is assumed that students can identify all works by title, artist (if known), culture (or nationality) and time period, medium, and style. It is also assumed that students will look up and be able to define the bolded key terms. In addition, further examples of what a student should be familiar with are listed below.

After reading Chapter 26, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Describe the political situation in Europe in the early twentieth century.
  2. Discuss the avant-garde.
  3. Explain the influence of African sculpture on early twentieth-century art.
  4. Describe Picasso’s use of Symbolism.
  5. Characterize Fauvism and compare it with Post-Impressionism.
  6. Compare German Expressionism with Fauvism.
  7. Discuss the idealist, spiritual, and visionary aspects of the Bridge and the Blue Rider.
  8. Describe the development of Matisse from 1905 to 1950.
  9. Identify the literary works produced by members of the Blue Rider and relate them to their paintings.
  10. Label the countries on a map of Europe.
