  • Psychologists have divided people into categories depending on their lifestyle.
    • Type A individuals are competitive, are aggressive, exhibit a driven quality regarding their work, and are hostile, both verbally and nonverbally.
    • Type B individuals are more cooperative, far less competitive, not especially time-oriented, and not usually aggressive, driven, or hostile.
    • Most people show a combination of both behavior types.
  • Men who display the Type A pattern develop coronary heart disease twice as often and suffer significantly more fatal heart attacks.
    • Type A behavior produces physiological arousal that may increase production of the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine.
  • Not everyone who displays Type A behaviors is destined to have coronary heart disease.
    • The evidence relating Type A behavior (and other personality types) to coronary heart disease is correlational.
