  • Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which a neutral stimulus comes to bring about a response after it is paired with a stimulus that naturally brings about that response.
    • The conditioned stimulus (CS) does not naturally bring about the response we are interested in.
    • The unconditioned stimulus, automatically causes a response, such as salivation, to occur.
    • The unconditioned response, or UCR, is the response that the UCS elicits automatically.
  • In conditioning, the CS is repeatedly presented just prior to the UCS.
    • When conditioning is complete, the CS will elicit a response which is called the conditioned response, or CR.
