  • Perception proceeds along two different avenues, called top-down processing and bottom-up processing.
    • In bottom-up processing, our perception is created by assembling and analyzing all of the most basic stimuli.
    • In top-down processing, perception is guided by higher-level knowledge, experience, expectations, and motivations.
      • Top-down processing is illustrated by the importance of context in determining how we perceive objects.
