  • There are some basic aspects of sexual responsiveness that we all share.
    • Sexual responses follow a regular pattern consisting of four phases.
    • In the excitement phase, an arousing stimulus begins a sequence that prepares the genitals for sexual intercourse.
    • Next comes the plateau phase, which is the body's preparation for orgasm.
    • The next stage is orgasm, an intense, highly pleasurable experience.
The subjective experience of orgasm seems identical for males and females.
    • Following orgasm, people move into the last stage of sexual arousal, the resolution stage.
During the refractory period, men are unable to develop an erection and are therefore unable to have another orgasm and ejaculate.
