Phillis Wheatley showed the whites of Britain and New England that enslaved Africans could rise above their social and economic circumstances, given appropriate education and encouragement, to master the poetic conventions of the period. While her execution may seem somewhat stilted to today's reader, she remains a pivotal literary figure who succeeded despite the barriers erected against women, the enslaved, and people of color.
