A. Live In (1)

The Live In, described in the textbook, usually takes about 10 hours of observation. Select someone on campus willing to let you spend some time with him or her, and over the next few weeks do your reporting. The work will be in the nature of a long feature story or a series.
Here are some possible subjects: a disabled student; an older student trying to balance studies with a job and family responsibilities; a student preparing for a role in a campus production; an athlete balancing practice and studies; a science student carrying out an experiment for a graduate degree; an instructor preparing for a dissertation defense; an admissions officer deciding on the next freshman class; the provost or budget officer preparing next year's budget; the campus official responsible for fund raising preparing to launch a new fund drive; a foreign student adjusting to the campus; a new instructor coping with his/her first classes; an instructor preparing materials for a tenure committee; an alumni officer putting together a class reunion; a student balancing jobs and classes; sorority or fraternity members screening potential new members; the organization of a new campus group—gay and lesbian, minority, political, etc.

B. Notification

Should parents be notified when their college son or daughter abuses drugs or alcohol?

Yes: Parents can play a crucial role in helping cope with the problem. Since parents pay for their children's education, they are entitled to know when something goes wrong. If parents are held liable for the actions of their children, then they ought to know when the children violate the law.
No: Notification violates the students' right to privacy. Not all students have a relationship with their parents that is positive and thus notification is meaningless. Complexities arise: Should married students, international students, graduate students be treated differently?
Conduct a survey on campus among different groups—students, faculty members, administrators. Write 350 to 500 words.
