(See related pages)

Purpose
This interactive allows you to explore the forces and motion of an object on an inclined plane.

Using the Interactive
  • Configure the interactive using the CONTROLS template on the right-hand side.
  • The left-hand side shows a brick on an inclined plane. A box on the upper left displays numerical data. To the upper right of the incline is a bar graph of the kinetic, gravitational potential, and total energies.
The Controls
  • Friction: Slider bars control the coefficients of static and kinetic friction. The coefficient of kinetic friction is forced to be less than or equal to the coefficient of static friction.
  • Angle: This slider bar controls the angle of the inclined plane with the horizontal.
  • Select Go! to animate the motion of the brick; and Reset to place the brick back at the top of the inclined plane.
  • View Vectors: Select the vectors you wish to be represented as arrows emanating from the brick.
  • View Speed: This slider bar controls the speed of the brick during animation.
  • Freeze Before Impact: Displays the final quantities for the vectors, numerical and graphical data.

In the default start up configuration select each of the View Vectors to display the forces acting on the brick. Note each of the force vectors.

What will happen to the force of friction if you decrease the angle?
A)It will remain exactly the same.
B)It will become more vertical and get larger.
C)It will become more horizontal and get smaller.
D)It will become more vertical and get smaller.
E)It will become zero when the angle begins to change.
2
What will happen to the normal force if you decrease the angle?
A)It will remain exactly the same.
B)It will become more vertical and get smaller.
C)It will become more horizontal and get larger.
D)It will become more vertical and get larger.
E)It will become zero when the angle begins to decrease.
3
What will happen to the gravitational force if you decrease the angle?
A)It will remain exactly the same.
B)It will become more vertical and get smaller.
C)It will become more horizontal and get larger.
D)It will become more vertical and get larger.
E)It will become zero when the angle begins to decrease.

Set the angle at about 20 degrees. Set the KINETIC FRICTION slider to 0.2. Set the STATIC FRICTION slider to 0.7. Set the VIEW SPEED slider to 0.2x. Select the FREEZE ON IMPACT checkbox.

Click Go!
