Interactive Quiz: Conservation of Angular Momentum
(See related pages)

Purpose
This interactive allows you to explore the conservation of angular momentum.

Using the Interactive

  • Configure the interactive using the INITIAL CONDITIONS template on the upper right-hand side.
  • Control the interactive using the RUNTIME CONTROLS template on the lower right-hand side.
  • The lower left shows the snowman holding the ball. The upper left is an idealized view of the rotating ball; this scene can be viewed from above (default) or the side (using the slider to the left) which also displays the angular momentum vector.

The Controls
  • Velocity: Determines the initial speed of the ball held by the snowman.
  • Radius: In the INITIAL CONDITIONS template, this sets the initial length of the snowman's arms which sets the radius of the circular motion of the ball. In the RUNTIME CONTROLS template, this changes the length of the snowman's arms making the radius larger or smaller.

1
Set the initial VELOCITY to 5 m/s and the initial RADIUS to 6.0m.
Lower the slider on the upper left to view the idealized scene from the side; note the angular momentum vector.

What will happen to the angular momentum vector if the radius is increased?
A)It will get longer.
B)It will get shorter.
C)Nothing, it is not affected by the radius.
2
Set the RADIUS value back to 6.0 m.

What will happen to the angular momentum vector if the velocity is decreased?
A)It will get longer.
B)It will get shorter.
C)Nothing, it is not affected by the radius.
3
  • Set the VELOCITY value back to 5 m/s.
  • Select GO! and observe the motion of the ball.
What will happen if the radius of the ball’s motion is decreased while it is in motion?
A)The angular momentum will increase.
B)The angular momentum will decrease.
C)The rotation speed will decrease.
D)The rotation speed will increase.
E)The rotation speed will remain the same.
