List of Commonly Mispronounced and Misspelled Words

If you leave out a syllable or a sound, add an extra syllable or sound, or mispronounce a word in some other way, you are likely to misspell it. Here are some frequently mispro-nounced, misspelled words. Be sure you know how to pronounce each of them. (Pro-nouncing them correctly has another benefit: You will make a better impression and seem more knowledgeable. Employers, college professors, and others notice the way you pronounce them.)
In each word below, pay special attention to the trouble spot, which is shown in color. To learn these words, use one of the techniques described in "Strategies for Dealing with Difficult-to-Spell Words" in this same part of the OLC. You may find it helpful to print a copy of this list.
