Here are suggested answers to the Definitions items in this chapter of the Online Learning Center website.

  1. The reader’s contribution is considered to be what readers “bring to the table” for reading comprehension. Their schemata (including world knowledge and experiences) naturally contribute to their understanding of written language.
  2. In the context of L2 reading, management strategies are guidelines to help readers separate a reading passage into more easily digestible portions. These guidelines or suggestions are offered during the Guided Interaction phase of a reading lesson.
  3. Assimilation is the final phase in a reading lesson. Assimilation brings purpose to reading because readers do something with the text. For example, they might outline the reading or write a summary.
