What's New

  • The text has been reorganized so that each chapter is broken-out by concise learning objectives. Each objective relates to a block of knowledge that should be studied as a unit. The objectives are carried through the end-of-chapter material.

  • To emphasize the relationship between analytics, strategy, and process we use special icons in the margin to point out each type of material.

  • The text includes new features such as Practice Exams, OSCM at Work boxes, and Concept Connections grids that increase student learning and retention.

  • Eleven Analytic Exercises are now spread through the chapters (eight are totally new).  These exercises use settings that are modern and familiar to students, such as Starbucks, cell phones, notebook computers, Taco Bell, and Toyota.

  • Major chapter changes:

    • Chapter 1 – Analytics is introduced in the opening section of the chapter.  Wall Street efficiency measures are now covered in this chapter.

    • Chapter 2 Strategy – More examples and better explanation of order winning and qualifying criteria.  New section on assessing the risk associated with operations and supply chain strategies.

    • Chapter 4 Projects – A new Analytics Exercise on cell phone design.

    • Chapter 5 Strategic Capacity Management – New and much clearer summary of what strategic capacity planning is.

    • Chapters 7 and 8 Manufacturing Processes and Layout – Explanation of “decoupling point” improved.  Many new problems and a completely revised Analytics Exercise on the design of a notebook computer assembly line.

    • Chapter 9 and 10 Service Processes and Waiting Lines – New Analytic Exercise that studies a Taco Bell Drive-Thru.  Spreadsheet simulations are now included in the Waiting Line chapter.

    • Chapter 12 and 13 Six-sigma and Statistical Quality Control – ISO standards coverage is updated to include ISO 26000 on socially responsible behavior.  New Analytic Exercise that relates to Toyota recalls is now included.

    • Chapter 15 Logistics, Distribution and Transportation – A new Analytic Exercise that involves the location of U.S. distribution centers for an industrial supplier.

    • Chapter 16 Global Sourcing and Procurement – New material on Total Cost of Ownership. A new Analytic Exercise centered on Global Sourcing Decisions.

    • Chapter 17 Enterprise Resource Planning – This chapter has been totally rewritten.  It is now less centered on SAP and includes material on “cloud” technologies.

    • Chapter 18 Forecasting – Chapter has been reorganized, starting with time series analysis and progressing to regression, decomposition, and error measurement.

    • Chapter 20 Inventory Management – A new Analytic Exercise focused on an Internet company that sells retail products has been added.

    • Chapter 21 Materials Requirements Planning – iPad bill-of-materials and cost data is now featured in the chapter.
