activity theory  View that the more active older adults are, the more likely they are to be satisfied with their lives
ageism  Prejudice against people because of their age. Is particularly problematic when it manifests as prejudice against older adults
eldercare  Physical and emotional caretaking of elderly members of the family
integrity versus despair  Crisis in which an individual reflects on the past and either sees it as positive or concludes that one's life was not well spent
selective optimization with compensation theory  View that successful aging is related to three main factors: selection, optimization, and compensation
socioemotional selectivity theory  View that older adults become increasingly selective about their social networks
