Web Quest Lesson Plan

Introduction

In this unit, students have explored the importance of journeys and destinations. In this lesson, they will read from two different websites that chronicle two different types of journeys. The first is about an organization called Project Rebirth that is filming the construction at Ground Zero in New York City. The second website includes the responses of several members of the American Motorcycle Association when asked, “Which is more important, the journey or the destination?"

Lesson Description

Students will read selected passages from Project Rebirth http://www.projectrebirth.org/index.html and The American Motorcycle Association www.ama-cycle.org/backfires/Oct01backfires.asp. They will answer questions based on what they read.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will read about the rebuilding efforts at Ground Zero and the impact of the construction on those affected by the events of September 11, 2001.
  2. Students will read about real journeys and destinations as told by members of The American Motorcycle Association.
  3. Students will answer questions based on the readings.

Student Web Activity Questions and Answers

1.How is Project Rebirth a journey? What is its destination?

Possible answer: The goal of Project Rebirth is to capture on film the process of rebuilding Ground Zero. There are two journeys being shown through Project Rebirth. The first is the journey of building a memorial site. The second is the journey the American people are making from grieving over September 11 to leading normal lives again in the present and the future. The destination of Project Rebirth is finalizing construction at Ground Zero and rebuilding the lives of those affected by the events of September 11.

2.Why do you think capturing the rebuilding process on film is a memorial to the victims of September 11?

Possible answer: I think the film shows the process of Ground Zero going from a place of destruction and chaos to a place of peace and pride. Seeing this transformation will help the American people deal with what happened on September 11 and know that the victims have not been forgotten.

3.Which do you think is more important: the journey or the destination of Project Rebirth?

Possible answer: I think the people working on Project Rebirth would say the journey is more important because it is the journey that allows people to see exactly what is happening day by day at Ground Zero, and that is what is helping them to heal.

4.Name two reasons why a motorcyclist said the journey is more important than the destination.

Possible answer: One motorcyclist said the journey is more important because of the challenge, the scenery, and the heightened sense of physical and mental being.

5.Name two reasons why a motorcyclist said the destination is more important than the journey.

Possible answer: One motorcyclist said the destination is more important because that is the goal and that is what causes (“is the catalyst for”) the journey.

6.Describe a journey you’ve taken.

Answers will vary.
