Web Quest Lesson Plan

Introduction

In this unit, students have explored the topic of what to do when they don't know what to do. In this lesson, they will read about people in two different situations who had to use their resources and mental faculties to decide what to do when they didn't know what to do. The first person, Rhona Marie Prescott, was an American nurse in the Vietnam War. The second person, Shilpa Natarajan, is a teenager from Chennai, India, who survived the tsunami that hit the region in December 2004.

Lesson Description

Students will read selected passages from Experiencing War: Veterans History Project <http://www.loc.gov/vets/stories/courage.html> and Tsunami: Shilpa's Story <http://googolplex.cuna.org/1/cnote/story.html?doc_id=890> and will then create a Venn diagram based on what they have read.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will read about how a nurse had to make difficult decisions to take care of her patients during a war, as well as about how one girl had to decide by herself what to do when a tsunami hit her house.
  2. Students will compare and contrast the experiences of these two people.
  3. Students will record their reactions to the readings by creating a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts the two situations.
