Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

April Showers

Writers often use sentence fragments in dialogue to convey the way that people actually speak. In “April Showers,” Willa Cather uses a series of fragments, such as in the following examples: “Mrs. Kidd’s new serial?” and “The name please? Evidently some unfortunate misunderstanding. One moment.”

Write a long paragraph in which you include dialogue that uses some sentence fragments. Use Cather’s dialogue style with its sentence fragments as a model. Keep in mind that the purpose of these fragments is to give the reader the impression that the characters are speaking in a natural way. Your written dialogue should flow naturally and be realistic and understandable.
