Nineteen Thirty-Seven

In this story, Edwidge Danticat includes several images of escape, flying, and spiritual uplift. For example, the imprisoned women are “rising from the ground like birds on fire.” Identify other images in the story where the narrator refers to people taking flight. Write a brief essay in which you respond to the following question: What philosophical view of oppression do you think the author implies through the use of flight images? Include references to the text to support your opinions.
