autonomy  The need of people to assert their independence and self-will.
cognition  Literally, the act of knowing; the act of becoming acquainted with the world and the objects, people, and conditions in it.
corporal punishment  Physical or bodily punishment with the intention of inflicting pain.
discipline  A means by which socialization takes place; the process of instruction in proper conduct or action.
intergenerational stake  Refers to family members' perceptions of closeness, especially as they relate to life course concerns that characterize each generation.
latchkey children  Unsupervised children who care for themselves before or after school, on weekends, or during holidays while their parents work. They commonly carry keys to let themselves in the house.
norms  Expectations for behavior as one performs social roles.
psychosocial task  The skills, knowledge, functions, and attitudes individuals need to acquire at different periods in their lives.
roles  Culturally defined social positions such as mother, grandparent, supervisor, or student.
socialization  The process by which people learn the ways of a given society or social group so that they can function within it.
