Mean versus the Median Exercise
Rice Virtual Lab
http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~lane/stat_sim/descriptive/index.html
Try this exercise and see how the mean and median change when data are piled up on one side of the distribution, or spread out, or evenly balanced. Paint the histogram. Try to get the mean and median at the same value when N is 33. When is there the most difference between the mean and median?
Boxplot and Outliers

Visit this website and see how a boxplot can reveal outliers or extreme scores. Select the data set, "Gas Mileage for Year 2000 Cars by Size." Make note of N and the values of the median, Q1 and Q3. Next, click "exclude outliers in graph" and then click "update." Notice the change in the boxplot.
