Comprehending and Applying Science

Chapter Overview

Science is about inquiry—asking questions and seeking answers about our natural world. An important part of inquiry is comprehension, or understanding what we read and see. Another important part is application, or using knowledge in new ways and in different contexts.

In this chapter you will learn about comprehending and applying science by studying the following topics:

  • summarizing the main idea
  • restating information
  • identifying implications and inferences
  • applying given ideas in a new context
  • applying prior knowledge in a new context
