“…Light is more than watts and foot-candles. Light is metaphor. Light is knowledge, light is life, light is light.”

- Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, 1993

Optics is the study of light that has always fascinated humans. In his famous book, On The Nature of Light, Vasco Ronchi wrote: Today we tend to remember only Newton and Huygens and consider them as the two great men who laid the foundations of physical optics. This is not really true and perhaps this tendency is due to the distance in time which as it increases tends to strengthen the contrast and to reduce the background. In reality, the discussion on the nature of light was fully developed even before these two men were born . . .

The world of Optics is changing at the speed of light with the latest advancements in Photonics and related fields. Subsequently, the knowledge of optics and photonics has become so important that an undergraduate course on optics and photonics has become essential not only for students of physics but of engineering as well. This signals the need for strengthening its fundamentals through a textbook on Optics.

Optics walks a tightrope between the mathematics and concepts. The demand of mathematics involved in the textbook, as it is of most concern, is just at the right level for most undergraduates. In addition, many examples of detailed, almost step-by-step derivation make this textbook ideal for self-studying.

The content-organization of the book, Ghatak: Optics, reflects the historical developments in the field of Optics and Photonics. It covers virtually all the topics in Optics, from Geometrical Optics, Wave Optics, and Photonics to Speckle Metrology.

This Online Learning Center is designed to enhance your learning experience. It provides a broad array of resources that will benefit both the instructors and students. Visit the Information Center to unravel the book's features.

The Student’s Center contains sample sections from the book across the various areas of Optics. This will give you the flavor of the published book.

The Instructor’s Center provides instructors with Chapter-wise PowerPoint slides and the Solutions Manual.

This site will evolve over time and we would be able to provide you with a wide range of resources that are currently under development.
