Chapter Overview

This chapter explains the reproductive system--a unique system because it is essential for the survival of the species rather than for the survival of the individual. The structures and functions of the male and female reproductive systems are explained (objectives 1, 2, 7, and 8). This chapter describes the structures of the ovary and testis, and how they produce sex cells (objectives 3 and 9). It traces the paths of both the egg and sperm, and describes the hormonal controls and accessory organs needed for the sperm and egg to unite (objectives 4-6 and 10). The chapter describes the events of the menstrual cycle (objective 11), and it explains the major events of pregnancy (objectives 12-16).

Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems is basic to the study of human sexuality and the process of reproduction.
