Chapter Overview

For most of our history, humans have been neither numerous enough nor manipulative enough to make much impact on the natural environment. Recently, however, that has changed. The current magnitude of human impact on the natural world is unprecedented in human history. Environmental science seeks answers to basic questions about the ultimate sustainability of our actions.

Without changing our relationship to the earth, our future is uncertain. Some attitudes and behaviors are changing. Will the changes be adequate and in time to avoid catastrophe? That is for us to decide.

In this chapter, you will also gain historical perspective. Knowing how we got where we are can give insight into our options for the future. There are reasons to be pessimistic, and yet there are signs of hope.
