Lightning happens suddenly and is over in an instant. The speed of this event makes it hard to study. Benjamin Franklin was an American scientist in the 1700s who studied lightning, and he was lucky to survive his own experiment. He flew a kite in a storm to show that storm clouds carry electricity.
