One of British Columbia’s important contributions to the field of renewable energy has come from the work of a Vancouver-based company, Ballard Power Systems, to develop a new kind of hydrogen fuel cell. Hydrogen fuel cells use the energy of a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity. The only waste product from this reaction is water. Hydrogen fuel cells can be used to run vehicles as well as devices such as laptop computers. Some people refer to fuel cells as a type of battery. Is this accurate? In what ways is a hydrogen fuel cell similar to a battery? In what ways is it different?
Find out how this technology works, from the ground-breaking company that makes it. Look at the diagram or watch and listen to the animation. (
