There are now FOUR exams?
2003: CompTIA was offering two exams— CompTIA A+ Core hardware and A+ Operating Systems Technologies
2006: Now there are four. Everyone must take the Essentials (220-601) exam then choose between one of the following:
220-602 (IT Technician) - This is the most comprehensive exam
220-603 (Remote Support Technician) - Structured more for Help Desk with less hardware and more soft skills
220-604 (Depot Technician) - Structured for depot techs with more hardware and no soft skills
Notice there is no longer a Hardware/Operating System separation between the first and the second exam. The 601 exam covers assembly, basic configuration and basic troubleshooting of both hardware and software. The 602/603/604 exams are geared towards more advanced configuration and troubleshooting. There's plenty of hardware and software in all exams.
