Upon completing this chapter, students should be able to:
  1. Understand diode structure and basic layout
  2. Develop electrostatics of the pn junction
  3. Explore various diode models including the mathematical model, the ideal diode model, and the constant voltage drop model
  4. Understand the SPICE representation and model parameters for the diode
  5. Define regions of operation of the diode, including forward and reverse bias and reverse breakdown
  6. Apply the various types of models in circuit analysis
  7. Explore different types of diodes including Zener, variable capacitance, and Schottky barrier diodes as well as solar cells and light emitting diodes (LEDs)
  8. Discuss the dynamic switching behavior of the pn junction diode
  9. Explore diode applications, including
    • Half-wave, full-wave, and bridge rectifier designs
    • Three-terminal voltage regulators
    • Buck and boost dc-to-dc converters
