Searching the World Wide Web

Chapter 5 Learning Objectives

You have probably already been using some of the search tools, but perhaps not as effectively as possible. Other tools may be new to you. In this chapter, you will learn what types of search tools are available, how to use them efficiently, and howthey work. The references accompanying this book provide many additional avenues in which to explore search engines. Our goals here are:

To describe directories, search engines, metasearch engines, and white pages and present examples of each.

To define the “invisible Web.”

To discuss search fundamentals, such as query types.

To describe search strategies using a number of sample searches.

To explore several search tools in depth.

To examine how search engines work.
