Creating Sentence Variety
Glossaryadverb clause | clauses built around adverbs; answer questions such as how and when?
| | | | command and exclamation sentences | sentences that either directly order (command) or express intensity of feeling or emotion (exclamation). Ex. of a command: Turn on the oven! Ex. of an exclamation: I'm thrilled!
| | | | coordination | joining equal sentence parts to form a compound sentence. Ex.: Aaron likes ice cream, and he eats a lot of it.
| | | | essential adjective clauses | clauses that would change the meaning of the sentence if they were left out
| | | | infinitive phrase | a sentence built around an infinitive--a verb with the word to. Ex.: To sleep, Jim needed a soft pillow.
| | | | participial phrase | a phrase consisting of a participle--a verb form ending with -ing, present tense, or -ed, en, -n ending, past tense--and words that describe a noun or pronoun
| | | | prepositional phrase | a phrase beginning with a preposition, such as by, above, over or with
| | | | subordination | joining two unequal sentence parts to form a complex sentence. Ex.: Aaron likes ice cream because it tastes so sweet.
