The Internet and the Web
Internet Exerciseshttp://www.cbpp.org/12-13-99tax.htm The Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that buyers had to pay state and local sales taxes only
when merchants had a store or office building in the buyer's state. Because Internet
merchants often do not have a physical presence in a buyer's state, most Internet
purchases are not charged a sales tax. Some believe this tax-free status has a negative
impact on local businesses (who must charge sales tax) and causes lost revenues in state
and local tax. Yet, others feel any tax on e-commerce would be hard to manage and is not
justifiable. Do you think there should be a sales tax on Internet purchases? Why or why
not? Click on the link to the article for some background information on this issue. |
