From the Textbook: Internet Activity (page 177) While the most famous mummies belong to the ancient Egyptians, other cultures and societies have also engaged in mummification. In 1995, the mummified body of a young Inca girl, probably a sacrificial victim, was discovered on the mountain of Nevado Impato. Evita Peron, the wife of Juan Peron, President of Argentina, died in 1952 and was embalmed. Her body disappeared in 1955, but was later recovered and returned to Argentina in 1974, still perfectly preserved. Vladimir Lenin, the Russian revolutionary leader who died in 1924, is also preserved as a mummy. Today, a more modern version of the mummification process is done with cryogenics. Bodies are frozen in liquid nitrogen and then preserved in a steel container. Using an Internet search engine , such as Google <www.google.com> or Yahoo <www.yahoo.com>, investigate the mummification or cryogenics process and then write a short summary of your findings. Do you believe in curses? When Howard Carter was warned that, "death comes on wings to he who enters the tomb of a pharaoh," he paid no attention. And yet his patron, Lord Carnarvon, died of a mosquito bite within days of unsealing King Tut's tomb. Other deaths quickly followed, including the death of a French scientist who visited the tomb shortly after its discovery, an X-ray specialist on his way to examine the mummy, and an American archeologist who died of a mysterious virus soon after a visit. Mere coincidences? What do you think? Check out the following websites and write a paragraph arguing your position on whether there was a curse. Be sure to use transition words in your paragraph.
