Officers and Organizations Police Officers I: Entering Police Work
Chapter OverviewTo become a police officer, applicants must go through a complex process that begins with qualifying for minimum requirements. This is followed by a series of tests involving written examinations, oral interviews and background investigations. There is much debate, however, as to whether the selection process used in hiring applicants can predict who will be good police officers.
This chapter explores the hiring process and examines each step that is involved in selecting applicants for police work. Research on motivations for people to become police officers and the effects of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action on the employment process are included. Finally, police training academy for new officer recruits is addressed. |
