Feature Summary

    • In Chapter One, The Study of Life, a new experiment regarding the use of artificial versus natural fertilizers serves as the basis for discussion of the scientific process.

    • Part V has been reorganized to include a chapter on Genetic Counseling. This new chapter shows how all aspects of genetics are involved in understanding and correcting our genetic inheritance.

    • Microbiology, Chapter 28, not only covers the biology of viruses, bacteria, archaea, and fungi, but also discusses some of the major infectious diseases in humans.

    • Environmental Concerns, Chapter 36, is a new chapter that shows the relationship between consumption of resources and pollution and their effects on biodiversity.

    • End-of-Chapter Material: The number of Testing Yourself questions in each chapter has been increased. Due to popular demand, Understanding the Terms, a section that helps students learn biology terminology, has been re-introduced. All boldface terms in the chapter are listed and page referenced. Following the list is a matching exercise that allows students to test their understanding of the terms.

    • Internal Summary Statements are located at the end of each major section of the chapter to help the student focus on the key concepts.

    • Chapter Concepts: The chapter outline contains questions that encourage students to concentrate on concepts and how they relate to one another.

    • An Emphasis on the Scientific Process: The introductory chapter begins with a new and expanded explanation of the scientific process. Science Focus readings occur throughout the text. These readings discuss recent biological research in the area under discussion.

    • Bioethical Issues: No general biology book covers as many issues or devotes as much space to this growing area of biology. Most chapters of Inquiry into Life end with a bioethical issue.

    • Customizable: Inquiry into Life is chapter-by-chapter color customizable so you and your students use only the chapters you want.

    • The Online Learning Center provides students with study tools such as art and animation quizzes, art labeling exercises, and quizzing, and access to an Online Tutor. Instructors will find a Course Integration Guide, Instructor's Manual, Lab Resource Guide, and much more.
