Development: Adolescence to the End of Life

Chapter Outline

The chapter examines development from adolescence through to late adulthood. The section on adolescence covers the physical, emotional, and cognitive changes that occur during the transition to adulthood. Next, early and middle adulthood is discussed. They are marked by the formation of a family, the establishment and success (or failure) in work, and the gradual progress toward old age. Finally, the chapter shows how old age does not conform to our myths about it. Many elderly people are still quite capable of leading active and happy lives. An examination of the physical, intellectual, and social changes that occur at this time of life show both improvements and declines in various types of functioning.
