Essay Quiz

A good friend of yours confides in you about two problems that are weighing on her mind from opposite ends of the life span. First, she is concerned because she just had a baby and the baby sleeps “almost all the time.” She has heard horror stories about sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and is worried that the baby’s sleep habits may be harmful to his well-being. Just the reverse is happening with her 75-year-old grandfather, with whom she has always been extremely close. He has insomnia, which is causing him to be irritable and constantly tired, and this seems to be affecting his memory. What would you tell her about sleep patterns for a normal baby and for older adults, and how can you advise her with respect to reducing the risk of SIDS and helping her grandfather?

Your high school psychology teacher has learned that you are taking this course in life-span development and has asked you to talk to her class about the course of physical development from infancy to old age. She has asked that you describe the patterns of cephalocaudal and proximodistal development, changes in height and weight throughout life, other physical changes as we age, and changes that take place in the brain. She also asks that you address different theories of biological aging and give a positive spin to your talk. Remembering that this was your favorite teacher in high school, what would you tell these high school students in response to her request?
