Your neighbor has just become aware that his son is left-handed. He’s particularly concerned because he remembers that as a child he was left-handed and was forced by his teachers and parents to use his right hand, something he believes caused him emotional problems, but he has observed that people who are left-handed have problems with even simple things, like using scissors. What would you advise him about his son?

Some neighbors in your community have begun attending town hall meetings to complain about a “noise problem.” It seems that three or four groups of teenagers have been getting together in each others’ garages and are playing music so loud that it can be heard for several blocks. Even local senior citizens with hearing problems are bothered by the loud noise and “booming bass.” You are contacted by the City Planner and asked to come up with some program to educate these youngsters and others in their schools about how this is not only a problem for those who are complaining, but also for others in the neighborhood and even these budding young musicians themselves. Knowing you are taking this class in life-span development, the City Planner also requests that you focus not just on the noise issue, but also that you make this an interesting educational experience by talking about sensation and perception across the life span. What will you include in your talk?
