Chapter ObjectivesThe world community faces unprecedented ecological challenges in the twenty-first century. Many political and business leaders have embraced the idea of sustainable development, calling for economic growth without destroying the natural environment or depleting the resources on which future generations depend. Yet the concept has remained controversial, and implementation has been difficult. The task for policymakers and corporate leaders will be to find ways to meet both economic and environmental goals in the coming decades, without sacrificing either. This chapter focuses on these key questions and objectives:
1What is sustainable development? What are the obstacles to developing the world's economy to meet the needs of the present without hurting future generations? |
| | | 2What are the major threats to the earth's ecosystem? |
| | | 3In what ways have population growth, poverty, and industrialization accelerated the world's ecological crisis? |
| | | 4What environmental issues are shared globally by all nations? |
| | | 5What steps has the world business community taken to reduce ecological damage and promote sustainable development? |
