Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
Chapter 8 - Systems of Linear Equations and InequalitiesThis chapter begins with an introduction to the solution of systems of equations by graphing and by substitution. Then the Addition Method is used as another method for eliminating a variable in a system of equations. The techniques are extended to systems of equations in three variables. Then matrices and augmented matrices are defined as part of a discussion of the Gaussian elimination method for solving systems of equations. Proficiency with matrices is extended through a section on determinants and Cramer’s Rule, and then linear inequalities in two variables are discussed, leading to the solution of systems of inequalities. The chapter concludes with a section on linear programming, including graphing of constraints, and maximizing or minimizing linear functions. |
