Use direct quotations under certain circumstances:
when they capture the essence of an idea accurately and briefly
when the sentence or group of sentences is worded particularly elegantly
when the words demonstrate the effectiveness of the original essay or the authoritative voice of the author
when the vocabulary simply cannot be changed without injuring the meaning of the original
