Oman is one of the most beautiful places that I ever lived. This came as a great surprise to me because Oman is a desert, and I had always imagined deserts as bleak, flat expanses of sand with little or nothing of interest. However, the desert of Oman was spectacularly beautiful. Its naked mountains rose to the sky in ever-changing shades of orange, red, and brown. Its craggy coastline fell into the azure sea with terrifying abruptness. Its endless, deserted beaches served as pristine playgrounds for all who ventured upon them. Although I now live among the lovely green mountains of my native Vermont, I sometimes long for the stark, astounding splendor of Oman.
