Why Do We Assess Students in Science?

HOW DO TEACHERS' BELIEFS ABOUT INSTRUCTION AFFECT THEIR METHODS OF ASSESSMENT?

Interview several teachers about their beliefs on teaching and assessment. Try to determine whether each teacher believes teaching is "telling students information" or "helping students construct their own understandings." Ask each teacher how he or she typically assesses students. What types of assessment do they use? What do the assessments measure? How do the teachers determine grades?

Analyze the difference between the "teller" teachers and the "constructivist" teachers. How does the curriculum vary? What about instruction? Assessment?

Record these ideas in your portfolio.
