Exercise Your College Reading Skills: Developing More Powerful Comprehension
Janet Elder,
Richland College
ISBN: 007256380x Copyright year: 2004
Feature Summary
Practice: Each chapter offers a brief overview and examples
of a skill, followed by three sets of progressively challenging exercises
from textbooks and other college-appropriate material. The practice sets provide
students with a minimum of 30 items through which to exercise their reading
skills. Three separate chapters are devoted to the recursive practice of all
skills taught to that point.
Value: For text-based reading courses, Exercise Your
College Reading Skills provides an inexpensive two-color text with numerous
photos, graphics, and cartoons. This also makes it attractive as a supplemental
text in literature-, news magazine-, or newspaper-based courses.
Flexibility:Exercise Your College Reading Skills
can be adapted easily for use in courses with readers at different levels
and courses that are informal or self-paced, or for students who may need
additional out-of-class work. The first exercise set consists of simpler material
and multiple-choice items. The second and third sets feature open-ended questions,
with the third set having more challenging material.
Compelling Selections: The excerpts and selections have
been drawn from a broad cross-section of current, widely-used, well-written
content area textbooks. These are enhanced by fiction and non-fiction literary
material by writers such as Tillie Olsen, Camus, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Annie
Dillard, Winston Churchill, Chief Joseph, Voltaire, and the poets Robert Burns,
Emily Dickinson, and Billy Collins.
Experience: The text's author, Janet Elder, is also co-author
(with Joe Cortina) of the successful Opening Doors: Understanding College
Reading, Third Edition; New Worlds; and Comprehending College Textbooks: Steps to Understanding and Remembering What You Read, Third Edition.
