The Follow-Up Investigation

Internet Exercises

    1.  Search several local newspaper and/or media sources on the web for a recent and highly publicized crime in your area. From the facts presented, how would you as an investigator conduct a follow-up investigation? What motives of the crime would you explore? Would you conduct a neighborhood and/or vehicle canvass? Would you conduct any type of surveillance? If so, where and for what purpose? What potential witnesses, victims, and suspects would you contact? Make a list of questions that you would ask each of these parties.

    2.  Learn more about the legal requirements for conducting electronic surveillance by logging on to the FBI's Law Enforcement Bulletin website at www.fbi.gov/publications/leb/leb.htm. Read the February 2000 article, "Electronic Surveillance: A Matter of Necessity." Under what conditions is a warrant needed to conduct electronic surveillance?
