The Crime Laboratory
Internet Exercises 1. Search the web and find several state-operated crime laboratories in your state. How many employees do these organizations have? What types of services do they provide? If you were a criminal investigator in your city, what would be the closest laboratory to your location? Next, search for local crime laboratories. What is the total number of employees in these laboratories? Do their services differ from those provided by the state-operated labs?
2. Go to www.crimelynx.com and search for information about postconviction DNA cases under "Crime Policy Links." What is the most recent estimate of the number of convicted offenders who have been exonerated due to DNA testing? According to the proposed S. 486 Innocence Protection Act of 2001, under what conditions can an offender request DNA testing? Who pays for the testing? What occurs if the DNA tests are inconclusive? In your opinion, will the increasing popularity of postconviction DNA testing affect the nature of criminal investigations? |
