Injury and Death Investigations

Internet Exercises

    1.  Within the last decade, several states have revised their statutes relating to domestic violence. Find out if your state has a specific statute on domestic violence. Does the statute outline under what conditions arrests can be made? Is there a mandatory-arrest law? Are there guidelines for officers to follow when addressing domestic violence incidents? How does your state's statute affect the investigation of domestic violence? Legal resource websites such as www.megalaw.com and www.crimelynx.com are a good place to start.

    2.  Find out more information about the prevalence of stalking by checking out the website www.soshelp.org/. What are the chances of a woman's being stalked in her lifetime? What percent of stalking victims report their victimization to the police? What percent of restraining orders against stalkers are violated? How does the nature of stalking affect a criminal investigation? How might an investigator approach the investigation of this crime differently from that of other crimes?
