Visit two or three teachers at various grade levels of your choice. Ask the teachers about the forms of assessment they use in their social studies curriculum. If possible, look at sample tests, classroom assignments, and student portfolios. Summarize your findings and share with your class.

Develop a file of at least 10 informal assessment techniques not mentioned in this chapter. These should be appropriate for assessing students' social studies learning at a grade level of your choice. Research other sources such as professional journals and Internet sites for ideas.

Examine a social studies basal textbook from a grade level of your choice. Select a unit of study and develop three alternative assessment tools appropriate for assessing students' learning. Refer to Alleman & Brophy's (1999a) guiding principles listed in the chapter.
